The publishing house "Akademia" has issued a guide to "The Foundations of Cable Engineering" under the editorship of I.B. Peshkov. The authors of the book: V.M. Leonov, I.B. Peshkov, I.B. Ryazanov, S.D. Kholodny.

In spite of the economic crisis in Russia the demand for cable and wire products has not slackened during the last decade, though the volumes of output have decreased markedly in comparison with 1990 values.

At present many new enterprises with relatively small production outputs of some types of cable and wire are operating along with the major cable plants that have many years' production experience.

The constantly rising demand for cable products applied in power industry, data transmission systems, specific areas of engineering and household is caused by the progress in these sectors, i.e. by the development of new means of data transmission, updating of household equipment, etc. As a result the need in competent professionals in this field is also rising, and therefore text-books and guides to theoretical basis and current state of cable engineering are in great demand and highly welcome.

The book contains characteristics of cable and wire products as means of energy and data transmission, their classification, as well as essential data on the theory and technology of production processes. Electric and magnetic fields in cable products and associated electrophysical processes are described. The fundamentals of the heat mass exchange processes that take place in cable production and operation are explained. The theoretical basis of electric and fiber optic cable technology is given. The problems of production automatization and cable testing are considered.

The authors used the experience of teaching cable engineering disciplines at Moscow Energy Institute (Technical University) while preparing the book.
